Moss Rose

Moss Rose is a plant that flowers where it’s hot and dry. This annual’s flowers – bright reds, oranges, yellows, purples and pinks – glow atop green, succulent leaves. Moss rose grows 4- to 8-inches tall and spreads up to 2 feet, making it a great groundcover.

Project 52 Wk 11 Darks & Lights

I really had a hard time with this weeks theme, I was considering doing something else until my roommate and I drove to the top of Paris mountain last night. I just had my simple point and shoot camera but I wanted to try and get a shot as it was beautiful. I didn’t get a clear picture but I really like this one of all the different colored lights.

Bored Dogs

I am going to be going back to work in an office. My dogs have gotten used to me being home all day and stopping what I was working on to play with them several times a day. Now they are going to be on their own for at least 8hrs a day. Bandit has done this before. But Baxter has never real known what it is like to stay home all day 5 days a week without me there to play with him.

So I have created a poll what do you give your dog to keep him occupied while you are gone to work

Unknown facts about Johnny Appleseed

Today is the day we honor Johnny Appleseed born John Chapman. The stories tells us he was a man that wondered the countryside spreading apple seeds.

Actually he planted nurseries instead of orchards. He would build fences around them to protect the orchards from the farm animals. He would leave the nurseries in the care of a neighbor, who would sell shares of the trees.  Johnny would come back every couple of years to tend to the nurseries.

Johnny would have the neighbors who were acting as managers of the nurseries to sell the trees on credit, but he would accept cornmeal, cash and used clothing in a barter trade.

Johnny did wear old clothes, because he would barter his new clothes. But contrary to popular belief he did not wear pots on his head or torn rags, even though he would go barefoot in the summer to save leather.

The reason he spent time wandering the countryside is because he was a missionary for The New church. He would tell stories to the children and spread the gospel to the adults.

Johnny was also a lover of animals. This is just one example of his kindness towards animals, When he heard a horse was to be put down, he bought the horse, bought a few grassy acres nearby, and turned the horse out to recover. When it did, he gave the horse to someone needy, exacting a promise to treat the horse humanely.

Why Day Light Savings Time?

Last night at choir practice we started discussing Day Light Savings time as we realized this weekend we would be losing a valuable hour of sleep. The question kept coming up, what is the point and who and why did it start. So after a little research here is what I found.

In 1784 Benjamin Franklin wrote in an essay that adjusting the clocks in the spring would be a good way to save on candles. But it actually wasn’t put in effect in the US until 1918 but was quickly changed back a year later. Then during World War II Day Light Savings Time was put back into practice to conserve energy. This time it lasted until 1945.

In 1966 the United States officially adopted the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which stated Daylight Savings Time to begin on the last Sunday of April and end on the last Sunday in October. In 2005 The Energy Policy Act brought about yet another change so the now observed dates for Day Light Savings Time begin at 2 a.m on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November.

Day Light Savings Time is not mandatory and two states Arizona and Hawaii  have opted to not participate.
